Livonia, Mich. – Dec. 29, 2003 – Quicken Loans Inc., the nation’s leading online lender, has been recognized by FORTUNE Magazine as one of the “100 Best Companies to Work For.”

Quicken Loans Inc., which consists of Quicken Loans, Rock Financial and Title Source, ranked 13th on the list, the highest ranking new entry this year.

“It’s common sense that if you hire great people, provide them the training and resources they need to do their jobs, and take good care of them, they will take good care of your clients,” said Dan Gilbert, founder and Chairman of Quicken Loans/Rock Financial. “It’s that simple. We have top-notch loan options and technology, but it’s our people who really make this place great. They are the secret to our success.” The company’s achievements include:

  • 650% increase in closed loan volume from $1.6 billion in CY 00 to more than $12 billion in closed loan volume in CY 03
  • 200% increase in headcount to 1,700 team members
  • 94% Client Satisfaction Score on loan closing surveys
  • Named “The Best and Brightest Company to Work for in Metro-Detroit” in 2002 and named to that list again in 2003

“We really care about making Quicken Loans/Rock Financial a fun and empowering place to work,” said Bill Emerson, Chief Executive Officer. “But what sets us apart is that we have a shared belief system about taking care of our clients. We set our goals as a team and then work together to achieve them. As a result, our team members come to work each day with a clear sense of purpose.”

Emerson and Gilbert believe that team members who have a common purpose, and take pride in the company, will deliver unsurpassed customer service to their clients.

“Every day our team members go the extra mile for our clients,” said Gilbert. “When a client wanted to close his loan while on vacation, we sent the notary to his lodge. We’ve closed loans overseas for deployed U.S. service members. When the Midwest was struck by a massive power outage last August, our folks didn’t miss a beat. They closed loans at our clients’ homes.”

Being named to FORTUNE’s list of “100 Best Companies to Work For” is extra-special, because the score is based largely on how our team members feel about the company,” said Emerson. “It’s gratifying to know they really do think this is a great place to work.”

Two-thirds of Quicken Loans Inc.’s score was based on how randomly-selected employees responded to the Great Place to Work Trust Index, a survey instrument measuring the quality of workplace culture. The remainder of the score is based on an evaluation of the company’s benefits and practices.

Some of the perks contributing to Quicken Loans/Rock Financial’s quality of worklife are an in-house rock band, “Rate Lock,” that plays at all company meetings; frequent “Big Top” barbeques in the parking lot; and “Ticket Window Thursday” during which CEO Emerson awards concert tickets over the PA system. And, despite having doubled in size, Emerson still sends hand-signed birthday cards to all team members, and sends their children gift certificates on their own birthdays.

The company also devotes extensive resources to training and development. Each team member receives more than 200 hours of training each year, including ongoing personal development coaching. In fact, Tony Robbins conducted a seminar for the entire company at the 2003 annual meeting.
