-Pistons, Quicken Loans and Fathead provide 1,200 Detroit students with weekend meals and school supplies-
Detroit, Mich. – Sept. 14,2010 – One in five Michigan children are in need of food assistance. In an effort to assist, Pistons forward Austin Daye, Quicken Loans and Fathead, with help from Gleaners Community Food Bank, are providing all 1,200 K-9 students at Detroit Edison Public School Academy with a weekend bag of nutritious food and school supplies. The event is taking place Friday, Sept. 17 from 1:30-3:30 p.m. at Detroit Edison Academy.
The weekend bags of food contain approximately six meals as well as nutrition information. This event serves as the launch of a statewide food program in which more than 1,000 additional students across Michigan are receiving the weekend bag of food for the entire 2010-11 school year, via proceeds from the 2010 Pistons Care Telethon benefiting the Food Bank Council of Michigan (FBCM) of which Gleaners is a member.
The event tips off with a student assembly titled “Homework before Hoops” focused around healthy living and education. Following the assembly, volunteers from the Quicken Loans family of companies and Pistons personnel, including Daye, will distribute the bags of food and school supplies to the students. Each week after this event for the remainder of the school year, more than 400 Detroit Edison Academy students on the free lunch program will receive the weekend bags of food, thanks to Quicken Loans and Fathead’s donation to the Pistons Care Telethon, which provides funding to agencies that belong to the FBCM.
“Quicken Loans, Fathead and our family of companies had a blast raising funds for the Pistons telethon last March, however, volunteering at Gleaners to pack the weekend food bags for Detroit Edison Academy students was incredibly rewarding,” said Wendy Kemp, director of community relations. “Making a difference in the lives of our children is important. They are our future.”
The 2010 Pistons Care Telethon was a 17-hour event that took place March 2 at The Palace. The telethon raised more than $400,000 in pledges. Net proceeds are being used to provide over 1.5 million meals for students through the weekend food program, food boxes for seniors and mobile distributions for families and homeless people statewide.
Detroit Edison Public School Academy is located at 1903 Wilkins Street, Detroit, 48207. The first assembly begins at 1:30 p.m., and the food distributions begin at 2 p.m.
